The best refurbished MacBooks for students in the UK (2026)

If you're buying a MacBook for university, refurbished is usually the smartest move. You get the same macOS experience and Apple build quality, but you're not paying new prices for something that's going to live in a backpack for three years.

The most common mistakes are buying either too little or too much power for the use case in which you wish to use the device.

Below is an overall good rule of thumb:

  • RAM: 8GB is fine for basic use, but 16GB is the safer choice if you multitask, keep loads of tabs open, or want the MacBook to feel fast in year three. We would recommend 32GB and above for the heavy creative tasks such as 3D modelling and video rendering.
  • Storage: 256GB works if you're mostly cloud-based and work mainly on text files. If you'll store lots of files locally or have large file sizes like in the situations mentioned above, 1TB or above would be ideal to not be anxious about running out of storage.

Our first budget recommendation is the 2020 M1 Macbook Air:

For a start it's quick, light, has excellent battery life, and handles day-to-day university work without fuss with the help of the first-generation Apple Silicon processor.

The 8GB model is best for creative writing and taking notes, as well as light coding and is a common choice for subjects such as Law, Business and Psychology.

If your course requires heavier creative work then we would recommend the stretch to a 16GB model to prevent any headaches due to lack of performance.

A more modern and powerful recommendation is the 2022 M2 MacBook Air:

If you want something that feels more modern and you're keeping it long-term, the M2 air is a nice step up. It's still thin and portable, just with a bit more headroom. It features a new form factor when compared to the 2020 Air and comes in even more colours.

This model is much better at multitasking due to the newer M2 model processor and will have a few more years of operating system support as the 2020 Air will be left on Tahoe and not be available to upgrade to any future MacOS

This doesn't leave the 2020 in the dust though as it does require more of a budget than the older Air.

Our more high-end pick is the 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1/M2): for students who push their laptop harder:

This is the one we tend to steer people towards if they're doing more demanding work for longer periods, like frequent compiling or heavier multitasking, it does have the older form factor for the MacBooks, however can still swing about it's weight class with the option of the M1 or the M2 Processor.

These models are most suited for coding delicate projects, creating development tools and longer editing sessions. As for specific subjects—we would expect those studying Computer Science, Media or Software Engineering to start looking at these models of MacBook as well of those with heavy workflows in STEM fields.

Our highest recommendations would be the more recent 14-Inch MacBook Pros with either the M1 or M2 processor:

If your course is genuinely heavy on editing, design, or productive work, a refurbished 14-Inch Pro is a brilliant buy. It is often what allows software to thrive as opposed to just be running. As with the 2 Air, it features a new design and all new power. This does come with a steeper price tag; however refurbished devices prove to be great value for those on a budget. If kept well these devices just keep trucking and have proven to be some of the most reliable MacBooks to date with the most common faults begin the fault of the end user such as smashed screens and liquid damage.

These devices are best for heavy video editing work, motion graphics, designs, multitasking setups and music production.

If you're not sure, the fastest way to get it right is to match your course to the spec you need. Tell us what you're studying and your budget, and we'll point you at the best option.
